Is this right?: Special voters are showing pictures of how they voted. Ghanaians react.
The early or special voting for this year’s general election has begun today 1st December 2020 and voters in this category have began voting in all the designated centres across the country.
Special voters for this year includes all the security and allied securities personnel who have a role to play on 7th December. Other special voters include Journalist, nurses, the electoral commission of Ghana staff and other essential service providers.
A center has been mounted in each of the 275 constituencies of Ghana for the Special Voting exercise.
The voting which is underway started 7 am this morning and already a worrying trend has started emerging on social media. Voters who are mainly security men and women have started sending pictures of their ballot paper and showing to the world how they voted.
Voting is secret and taking picture of how one voted to be displayed to the world is part of Ghana’s electoral offences. But these group of special voters who are assumed to be an elite group are busily flaunting the rules of the electoral system
The reason for which a voter will take his or her phone to the both and take picture of how he/she voted to show to the public remains a mystery to this writer. Some say, people do that in order to have evidence to show simply because they might have collected money and promised to vote in a particular line.
Some see it as a normal practice while others do not see it as cool at all. But what is clear is that, it is an electoral offence and when you caught, you will be in hot waters.
